Celebrate Phosphorus Week 2025 with Us!

TEMPE, Arizona – Monday, April 7th will kick off the 15th week of the year –and for the second year running, the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance and the Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center are proud to celebrate Phosphorus Week 2025!

This annual event shines a spotlight on phosphorus – one of the most important yet often overlooked elements. As a key ingredient in fertilizers, phosphorus is essential for life and plays a critical role in feeding the world. Due to inefficiencies, not all phosphorus makes it into the food we eat. Instead, it can transfer into waterways, leading to serious environmental problems, including harmful algal blooms and climate change. As the global population grows, so does our demand for food—and with it, our reliance on phosphorus.

Wicked Problem That Needs Collective Action

Managing phosphorus sustainably is complex. There’s no single solution because managing phosphorus sustainably requires expertise in so many areas—crop and soil science, wastewater management, materials science, engineering, public policy, economics, and more. Solving this challenge requires collaboration across disciplines, industries, and communities.

Our Goal

That’s where Phosphorus Week comes in. Our goal is to raise awareness about phosphorus and its global impacts on food security, water quality, climate and biodiversity. But we can’t do it alone—we need your help to educate the public and inspire action.

How You Can Get Involved

Join us in spreading the word! Follow the Alliance and the STEPS Center on social media, engage with our content, and share why phosphorus sustainability matters. We will have a Social Media Kit available for anyone that is interested, so reach out to us if you’d like a copy. Together, we can make a difference!

About Us

The Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance is a North American member organization that comprises public and private sector organizations from across the phosphorus value chain who collaborate to promote the sustainable use, recovery, and recycling of phosphorus in our food system. The STEPS Center aims to tackle the challenges of phosphorus sustainability. We approach research through convergence, forming multidisciplinary teams of engineers, social scientists, natural scientists, and industry stakeholders united under the goal of a sustainable phosphorus future.
